Is Your Family Protected? What You Should Know About Municipal Water Purification

The complete water purification process obviously starts with the treatment facility, and it also includes you, the home owner. They do their share. You do yours - by installing a water purifier system.

There are a variety of water purifiers to choose from these days. In order to choose the right one, it helps to do a little research.

Here are a few things that you should know.

Public water purification in this country relies heavily on chemical disinfection. The most commonly used chemical is chlorine.

We have to be thankful for what chlorine does. It has prevented the cholera and typhoid outbreaks that can decimate entire populations. But, we also need to be aware of its drawbacks.

Not all bacteria can be removed through chemical disinfection. Without a home water purifier, you run the risk of illnesses ranging from diarrhea to serious gastrointestinal complications.

Cryptosporidium is one type of bacteria that is resistant to chlorine disinfection. Government agencies say that no matter how good your public water purification system is, there is a risk of cryptosporidium contamination. They also say that it is difficult to test for.

People who become infected by the parasite have, in some cases, died from the infection. Please be aware there are some home water purifiers that can remove cryptosporidium and insure your familys safety.

The chemicals used at public water purification facilities are health hazards to humans, as well as the germs they target. They cause skin irritation, digestive problems and have been linked to various forms of cancer.

In order to completely protect yourself, you need a water purifier that can block chemicals like chlorine, usually with activated carbon. Carbon water purifiers will also improve the taste and smell of what normally comes out of your kitchen faucet.

Another problem that the public water purification plant cannot address are the by-products of disinfection.

One of these by-products, known as THMs, is chloroform gas. Government agencies have said that chloroform gas is present in most homes around the country. The gas is a health hazard that causes dizziness and headaches, but worse yet, the THMs build up in the fat cells of your body.

In women with breast cancer, it has been found that the THMs in their fatty tissue are nearly twice as high as that found in healthy women. This finding seems to indicate a link between THMs and cancer.

It takes a really good water purifier to block THMs. Most water purifiers do not have the technology that it takes to do the job.

In order to completely protect your health and your family, you would need a whole house water purifier that is certified to remove THMs. Check for performance data sheets and certifications before you buy (the better water purifier companies post them on their websites).

Public water purification has come a long way since the days when the people of India filtered their water through a porous clay pot, but there are still problems. We can address those problems with water purifiers. The technology that is not found in a treatment facility can be created for a reasonable price in your home.

Water purification and protection is everyones job. Take care what you pour down the drain, and the quality of what comes out of peoples faucets will gradually improve.

In the meantime, invest in a water purifier. Your family's health is worth it.
